But, alas, my vacation has come to an end, as vacations often do, and I am back in the city, back to work, and back to reality. If, like me, vacation withdrawal has left you sniffing the bottom of your beach tote and lathering on sunblock instead of moisturizer each morning, here are a few places you can go to reclaim that beachy feel while staying on the UES:
Atlantic Grill, on the corner of 77th and 3rd, creates a Cape Cod feel with its light blue walls, open, airy atmosphere, and fresh gourmet seafood. The restaurant’s shore-inspired fare includes Maryland crab cakes, Maine lobster, Atlantic halibut, and a variety of sushi and sashimi.Bar Coastal: If the Jersey shore isn’t your thing, try the laid-back California feel at Bar Coastal, on the corner of 78th and
1st. With surfboards adorning the walls, signs pointing to Beverly Hills and The Beach, and daily drink specials, this is a great place to at least pretend you’re on vacation. The Beach Café: With outdoor seating, coastal-themed paintings, and a raw bar, this restaurant on 2nd Ave. between 69th and 70th will give you a little taste of the beach on the UES.
Hawaii Sushi: If you opt for a more tropical locale, try Hawaii Sushi, on 2nd Ave. between 76th and 77th. The tiki-style décor, open-air feel, and Hawaiian-inspired sushi menu will have you saying “Aloha!” in no time.
And, if you’re still craving sea breezes and salty air, head down to the promenade by Carl Schurz Park, spread out your beach blanket, turn off your cell phone, and try to pretend that the warm breeze you’re feeling is coming off the Atlantic Ocean rather than the East River.
Just try to resist the urge to go swimming.
